To warn your doctor of the work of your pregnancy is to put one more asset on your side. Adjustment of your workstation or your schedules, temporary assignment to another position, consultation with your doctor for possible work stoppages ... enjoy!

The occupational doctor: a weight worker during pregnancy

  • Do you think that the occupational doctor will duplicate your doctor? Not at all ! The particular supervisory task is the potential risks that you may face during your pregnancy as a result of your work. If it is up to you alone to return the initiative to address him, know that he will be a valuable ally during these nine months.
  • If the monitoring of the state of your pregnancy is not his role, it will give you special attention: indeed, the regulation provides a greater availability for pregnant women. He will judge the nature and frequency of any examinations intended to monitor the compatibility of your condition and the nature of your work. Exams that, of course, will not be your responsibility.

Occupational doctor: at what level can he intervene?

  • It can intervene with your employer to request a layout of your workstation. Asked for a limited time, these arrangements are not always easy to obtain. Be aware, however, that they will necessarily be granted if they are justified, either by a risk for your future baby, or by complications leading to a change in your ability to work. For example, the occupational doctor may ask for a reduction in hours, staggered hours that allow you to avoid rush hours on public transport, and permission to sit down from time to time if you work standing up.
  • The unavoidable constraints of some jobs sometimes require a temporary assignment to another position. It is stipulated in the Labor Code that in the event of a conflict with your employer, the occupational doctor decides on the medical necessity of this change, as well as on your suitability for the new job that has been proposed to you. Your employer is obliged to take into account the proposals of the occupational doctor or must give his reasons in case of refusal. The final decision will be made by the labor inspector on the advice of the medical inspector of work, seized either by you or by the occupational doctor. This temporary assignment ends if your state allows you to return to your usual position and can not continue after the birth.
  • If your position is considered dangerous and your employer can not assign you elsewhere, you will be eligible for a work stoppage. The compensation paid by your employer may take the form of differential or complementary benefits to those of the Social Security or consist of the maintenance of the salary (according to company agreements or the collective agreement if it so provides).

The doctor at work: a liaison with your doctor

  • Your doctor often ignores all of your working conditions. The information that can be transmitted to him by the occupational doctor will help him to take better care of your pregnancy. This dialogue between the two is all the more necessary in case of complicated pregnancy or requiring work stoppages.

Good to know

Like any doctor, the occupational doctor is obliged to respect medical confidentiality. He can not in any case reveal your pregnancy to your employer if you do not want it.
