In France, since 1998, maternity wards have been classified into three categories: levels 1, 2 and 3. These are not quality criteria, but assessment according to the level of care they provide for new patients. born.

Level 1 maternity hospitals

  • They support newborns between 30 and 32 AS, weighing between 1000 and 1500 g that do not need to be intubated.

Level 3 maternity hospitals

  • These maternities have an obstetric unit, a neonatology unit and a neonatal resuscitation unit.
  • They support high-risk pregnancies and newborns with severe distress and no breathing autonomy.
  • They welcome children born between 24 and 25 SA and from 500 g.
